USAID Ghana is disbursing US$706,555 to 25 civil society organizations working in the Western Region, to help deepen citizen participation in local governance. The official launch was held on Monday December 5, 2011 at the Western Regional Coordinating Council. On the sidelines of the launch, a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed with 5 districts. Chief Executives of the Shama, Bibiani Anhwiaso Berkwai Districts, and Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipality, were present to sign the MOU, which will help these assemblies generate more funds internally. USAID, through LOGODEP, will provide capacity building, procurement of maps and IT equipment respectively, valued at over US$240,000.

Traditional authorities constitute the majority of custodians of land in the Western Region. Land in this region is coming under increasing pressure mainly due to the activities of an emerging oil and gas industry. As a result, USAID through LOGODEP, has organized a training workshop to help deepen the understanding of chiefs, queen mothers and female chiefs in Ghana’s ongoing land reforms.
